MOT Tests in the UK

If you drive a vehicle in the UK, then you need to know about the MOT tests.  MOT is an acronym for Ministry of Transportation.  However, the word refers to a test that must be completed on vehicles to ensure they meet the minimum standards of standards for environmental compliance and road safety.

When you purchase a new car, you don’t have to worry about the MOT immediately.  An assumption is made that new cars are going to be fine on the roads so they do not need to be tested.  However, once that car becomes three years old or if you purchase a car that is already three years or older then you need to complete the MOT test for that vehicle.

The current cost of the test for most vehicles is £50.35.

Who Handles the MOT?

The MOT testing is specifically handled by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) which is a part of the Ministry of Transportation.  The department is a relatively new creation: it was formed in 2003 by the combination of two other roles within the ministry.

The VOSA has a specific mission which governs these tests.  Among its missions is to safe lives by keeping the roads safe and to protect the environment by keeping vehicles that produce excess pollution off the streets.

Checking Your MOT

While a MOT is definitely important if you are already the owner of the car, it can also be important if you are planning to purchase a used car.  You want to make sure the car currently meets the required standards before you agree to pay for the vehicle.

To make this process more convenient, UK drivers can now check their MOT online.  The site allows you to confirm that a MOT you have been given is authentic, lets you see the MOT testing history for that particular vehicle, and gives you the opportunity to check on the status of recently tested vehicles.

Using the site to check your MOT is free.  All you need to use the site is the vehicle registration number and one of the following two items:  the document reference number or the MOT test number.

Maintaining the Roadworthiness of the Vehicles

Obviously, you want to keep your car in good working order prior to the MOT test.  If your vehicle does not pass, then you will have to pay for a repeat test once the mechanical changes are made.  Even though the re-test only costs £10 maximum, redoing the test is a hassle. Simply doing a good job of maintaining your car can prevent the need for this.

Even after your vehicle passes the MOT, you don’t want to slack off on routine maintenance.  Remember you have to pass that test every year so you need to keep the vehicle in good shape all year round or it will fail to pass next year’s test.

Remember that if you do need to make repairs, you should always purchase the highest quality parts for the vehicle.  These parts last longer and will help you car pass these inspections more easily.
